Japanese Ecommerce at a Glance

Japan is the fourth-largest e-commerce market in the world, counting itself amongst giants such as the United States and China, and will pass the United Kingdom in market size in the near future. Its e-commerce market as of 2021 was valued at JPY22. 4 trillion (US$217.5bn) (€153.6 billion / USD $184.4 billion) according to according to GlobalData's E-Commerce Analytics., the online merchandising sector alone growing by 21.71% from 2019. Growth has dramatically increased since COVID-19 and that growth is expected to persist. Average online spending per household reached 19,515 yen (about $178) between October and December 2020, an increase of 44% from December to March, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. The country itself has a large, mostly middle-aged population of 126 million (the median age is 48) that is affluent enough to purchase a wide variety of goods. Smartphone penetration has reached 83% and 65% of all online transactions happen over mobile devices. Japan’s developed economy, infrastructure, distribution channels, highly urban population, and single language make the market attractive to potential online retailers.
